These pretty yet practical girl’s culottes have been designed for girls who like to dance like princesses and climb trees. Pretty enough to wear to an afternoon tea party, yet robust and comfortable enough to venture up to the highest limb of that old oak tree. A perfect combination.
They are styled at the waist with pleats, and feature a wide elastic waist band for comfort and easy dressing. The wide leg sits just above the knee, allowing for ease of movement and cool comfort.
Note: Fabric lengths given are for directional prints. You may be able to use less if using non-directional fabrics. Allow extra to match stripes or prints.
Printing & Cutting:
Ensure you print the pattern at 100% scaling. Page 1 has a test square - print this first and measure to ensure you have your scaling correct.
Trim each page along the right hand and top edges as indicated by the scissors symbol. Layout in a 5 x 2 grid, matching all diamonds and tape together.
Before you start: It is recommended that you prewash or soak your fabric and elastic to ensure any shrinkage happens before you cut!
Cut one pair from main fabric, and transfer all pattern markings that correspond to your chosen size.
Seam Allowances Included: 1cm (3/8")
Hem Allowances Included: 1.5CM (5/8")
Create pleats. Fold fabric with the wrong sides together along each solid line marked on the pattern. Press.
Fold the pleats towards each dotted line in the direction indicated by arrows. Press and pin each pleat in place.
Baste each pleat except for the two centre back and two centre front pleats
With right sides facing, sew each inner leg seam. Press, then finish edges with zig zag or overlock stitch. Press seams open.
Turn one leg piece through to the right way. Place this leg inside the other, matching notches along the centre back and front and inner leg seams. Stitch. Press, then finish edges with zig zag or overlock stitch. Press seams open.
Turn culottes through to the right way.
Create centre front and back pleats by folding each pleat into the centre to line up with the centre front and centre back seams respectively. Baste centre front and centre back pleats.
Stay stitch waist just inside the 1cm seam allowance. This will prevent your pleats distorting and stretching when you apply the waist elastic.
Change your machine needle to a ball point or stretch needle!
If using Miss Maude 50mm wide elastic: cut your elastic to length according to the table above.
If using an alternative elastic: take your elastic and measure it around your child’s waist to ensure a firm but comfortable fit. Allow an additional 2cm for seam allowance.
Zig zag each end of the elastic to prevent fraying.
With right sides facing, sew ends together with 1cm seam allowance. Press back seam allowance with your fingers then top stitch flat.
The seam just created will be the centre back. Fold waistband into four even sections to mark the centre front and sides. Mark with pins.
Turn culottes inside out. With wrong sides facing, pin waist band to main fabric at waist - matching centre fronts, backs and sides.
With the right side of elastic facing up, stitch to waist with 1cm seam allowance. As you sew, gently stretch the elastic to fit with the main fabric.
Trim seam allowance of main fabric to 5mm.
Fold elastic over to the right side of the culottes and, starting at the centre back, edge stitch in place. Again, as you sew, gently and evenly stretch the elastic to fit.
Remove basting threads.
Change your machine needle back to a universal needle!
Hem each leg. Fold over and press 7mm towards the inside of each leg. Repeat to enclose raw edge.
Top stitch 5mm from edge to finish each hem.
And you are done.
